Auto Insurance in California
In California there is a legal obligation for vehicle owners to purchase a minimum amount of liability insurance. This means that when it comes to buying auto insurance drivers will have to purchase at least $15,000 coverage for death or injury of any one person in one accident, $30,000 for all persons in any one accident and $5,000 for property damage liability coverage. Even though this is the minimum required by law it is not recommended. Think about the property damage portion. Do you know anyone in Los Angeles that drives a vehicle worth only $5,000? Well you might, but not too many people especially in Southern California have low end vehicles. Most are driving BMW’s, Mercedes, Lexus, Audis and the like. If you do not have adequate insurance to cover the damage you caused, they could sue you for the unrepaired damage and possibly garnish your wages, EVEN if you have coverage but if it is not adequate, it is not enough. Please think about this, before you make your auto insurance decisions solely based on cost.
Other types of auto coverage include:
• Collision damage which provides coverage for damage to your own vehicle whether you are at fault or not.
• Comprehensive coverage for damage to your own vehicle from perils such as fire or hail and falling objects.
• Uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage which compensates you if you suffer damages or injuries as a result of a driver who is not fully insured.
Before purchasing auto insurance, Los Angeles drivers should obtain several quotes. It is important to become familiar with all the different types of coverage before making the final commitment to a policy. It is also important to find a knowledgeable and helpful agent that can answer all of your questions and help you determine what is right for you and your family.
